This report aims at highlighting how the Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII - regulation 28 of MARPOL1 Annex VI (MEPC.352(78), 2022, p. 3) ) results in structural disadvantage for chemical parcel tankers, mainly due to trading patterns, that are outside of shipowner’s or operator’s control (see Section 4).
This paper is based upon real live performance data that is scaled and adjusted to comparable Clean Petroleum Products (CPP) routes, comparing the resulting CII results (see Section 5, for more details).
The approach followed for this investigation shows that CII is likely to yield different ratings in light of factors that are not directly related to ships efficiency or optimized operations. On average the CII calculated for parcel tankers is 19% higher than the corresponding rating for product tankers
