Saudi Aramco has demonstrated its commitment to improving environmental standards across its offshore and harbour support fleet through collaboration with class
The world’s largest oil production and exporting group is working with ABS to validate improvements made on greener vessel operations.
Saudi Aramco intends to achieve ABS’ environmental protection Enviro notation for all 23 vessels in its domestic fleet supporting offshore projects and ship dockings in ports.
This entails earning the Enviro notation on offshore support vessels, tugs, self-elevating units and special purpose vessels.
Saudi Aramco has already achieved this for seven of its vessels and the remainder of the fleet is currently being evaluated by class inspectors.
ABS’ Enviro notation identifies the level of compliance with international environmental protection requirements and integrates further ABS environmental protection requirements.
“Obtaining the environmental notation illustrates our marine department’s willingness to go well beyond basic compliance,” said Saudi Aramco marine department manager Abdullah Tewairqi.
“It is part of our ongoing commitment to maritime excellence, and environmental protection in particular. This international accreditation confirms and consolidates Saudi Aramco’s standing as a market leader in the field of marine environmental protection,” said Mr Tewairqi.
Saudi Aramco is joining many other owners in achieving Enviro as ABS has provided this notation to more than 1,100 vessels in the global fleet.
“ABS is committed to supporting the industry in reaching its environmental objectives and the Enviro suite of notations sends a strong message that environmental impact has been fully considered,” said ABS senior vice president of global engineering and technology Patrick Ryan.
“It is evidence of the commitment of owners and operators to meeting and exceeding international environmental regulations,” he said.
This notation, together with the enhanced Enviro+ notation, was developed with the objective of promoting environmentally focused design, construction, and operation of ABS-classed vessels.
“The Enviro notation demonstrates both Saudi Aramco’s and ABS’ commitment to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s higher environmental standards,” said Mr Ryan.
“We are supporting Saudi Aramco in achieving their vision for a fleet that is equipped for greener operations.”
