The bulk carrier owner is installing VSAT and LEO connectivity on its 24-ship fleet to boost crew welfare and enable its digitalisation transition
Thailand-headquartered dry bulk shipping operator Thoresen Shipping has contracted Marlink to deploy its Sealink NextGen combined services on 24 vessels as part of its digitalisation transition.
Marlink will install terminals, hardware and software to connect to geostationary orbiting (GEO) and low Earth
orbiting (LEO) satellites through an integrated network, and very small aperture terminal (VSAT) technology and flat-panel terminals to connect with SpaceX’s Starlink LEO constellation and provide critical ICT solutions.
“As a fully integrated shipping company and volume carrier, we recognise the competitive advantage a digitalised operating model can bring to our fleet and our customers,” said Thoresen Shipping.
“This transition will bring tangible benefits for the Thoresen fleet, our crews and our shore teams, enabling us to respond quickly to changes in the market.”
Marlink said the integration includes software-defined application routeing (SD-WAN) involving Marlink’s XChange network management tool and end-point detection cyber protection.
The SD-WAN functionality enables cloud applications and remote operations at sea by ensuring guaranteed connectivity levels to run business and crew applications on a hybrid network solution.
XChange seamlessly fuses different networks – whether GEO, LEO or L-band backup – in a single, secure network with the highest uptime available and guaranteed global coverage.
It said Sealink NextGen would enable Thoresen Shipping to optimise its operations and improve customer support through enhanced application performance and network security. It will also enhance crew communications, and improve operational support, enabling collaborative workflows and remote access to shipboard systems.
Thoresen Shipping, with a presence in Dubai (UAE), London (UK) and Singapore, operates 24 fully owned Supramax and Ultramax bulk carriers deployed in trades that service clients with contracts of affreightment, period and spot charters in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
