As the international, EU and the United States emissions regulations tighten, vessel owners and operators are turning to new, more efficient engine and hybrid propulsion system designs and exploring the use of greener alternative fuels.
While aimed at lowering fuel consumption and reducing greenhouse gas emissions, these technologies could potentially generate torsional vibration issues—a costly repair and maintenance problem for vessel operators.
Listen to Regal Rexnord’s Bob Lennon, a power transmission expert who oversees the company’s marine coupling program, as he discusses recent trends in marine propulsion and explains the causes of torsional vibration, and how owners, designers and shipbuilders can avoid them through proper engineering and analysis. With more than 40 years in the power transmission business, Mr Lennon is an engineer that has spent most of his career working in sales management, coupling engineering and applications at Centa. Centa is part of Regal Rexnord, a global leader in the design and manufacture of power transmission solutions for marine drivetrains and deck machinery.
