Promising to "reduce propulsion energy consumption by up to 22% compared with conventional shaftlines," the ABB Dynafin concept is also compatible with electric propulsion systems, according to ABB
ABB said its new concept for marine propulsion consists of an electric motor powering "a large wheel rotating at a moderate 30 to 80 rounds per minute" with a series of vertical blades that extend from the wheel, each powered by an individual motor and control apparatus.
"The combined motion of the wheel and blades generates propulsion and steering forces simultaneously, enabling ground-breaking operational efficiency and precision for ships. The concept follows ABB’s proven design philosophy in marine propulsion of gearless power transmission," the company said.
ABB estimates the technology, still in its concept stage, will reach prototype stage in 2025. Thus far, the Dynafin system has taken more than a decade of research, development and testing to put together. The inspiration for the system, according to the company, is the dynamic motions of a whale’s tail.
Among its claimed benefits, ABB said the Dynafin propulsion system will enable new vessel designs and, in studies by Japanese maritime design and engineering consultancy OSK-ShipTech, the system was verified to use 22% less propulsion energy when compared with a "conventional shaftline configuration". The concept design is also, ABB said, fully compatible with zero-emissions battery and fuel-cell technologies.
"Initially available in the power range of a 1–4 MW per unit, the new propulsion concept is particularly effective for medium-sized and smaller vessels, including ferries for passengers and vehicles, offshore support vessels operating at windfarms, harbour vessels and yachts.
"By reducing vibrations and noise levels, the system improves passenger and crew comfort. In addition, the propulsion concept delivers superior manoeuvrability, and positioning performance, ie, the capacity of the vessel to maintain the desired position and heading," ABB said.
