“The hunger for feeders continues unabated” – especially for the 7,000-TEU range, said BRL Consultants in its latest weekly newbuild newsletter
It highlighted the latest box ship feeder orders, including an order from China United Lines for two dual-fuel 2,700-TEU newbuildings from Huangpu Wenchong. This comes on the back of four 1,900-TEU orders from the same shipyard last year.
CUL also ordered four 1,900-TEU units last year at US$26M each from Huangpu Wenchong and has now rewarded the builder with more business. Two 2,400-TEU newbuildings are already under construction at Yangzijiang Shipbuilding.
For the moment, deliveries of all eight vessels are scheduled for 2023 commissioning, said BRL’s weekly newbuild newsletter.
John Fredriksen has entered into a letter of intent with Qingdao Beihai Shipbuilding for four 7,000-TEU feeders. They will come under the Norway-based SFL Corporation in which Frederiksen has an ownership interest, said BRL’s newbuilding letter.
Elsewhere, Ocean Network Express (ONE) has dropped plans to hold options on five 13,000-TEU container ships, BRL’s weekly newbuild newsletter reports. They will just order five firm vessels due to “rising costs and long lead delivery times nudging 2025”.
BRL’s newsletter added that HJ Shipbuilding & Construction (formerly called Hanjin Shipbuilding) is expected to sign a formal contract with MPC Capital to construct four 5,5,00-TEU feeders for delivery in 2024 and 2025.
It added, “The yard has confirmed the same German owner is shortly due to sign for another order covering for four 6,000-TEU feeders. Costed at around US$73M apiece, deliveries will follow in 2024 and 2025.”
