Lloyd’s Register has granted an approval in principle (AiP) to US-startup Amogy Inc for a new power system that generates electricity from liquid ammonia for use in maritime vessels
Amogy is developing systems that generate power from ammonia by cracking liquid ammonia to hydrogen, and using the produced hydrogen to generate electrical power through proton-exchange membrane fuel cells.
The startup is backed by AP Ventures and Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund and closed a US$46M bridge funding round, led by AP Ventures, Amazon’s Climate Pledge Fund and Saudi Aramco Energy Ventures, in June 2022.
The company called the award of the AiP “a significant milestone” in certifying its ammonia-to-power system for maritime applications, adding it will continue to push the technology and seek type-approval processes to make the system fit for commercial use in the maritime segment.
Successful demonstrations of this technology have been conducted on a drone at a 5-kW scale in 2021 and a tractor in May 2022. The trial with a tractor used a 100-kW powerpack.
A demonstration is due to take place on a maritime vessel next year with plans to scale the powerpack to 1 MW.
Amogy chief executive Seonghoon Woo said, “This important milestone is further validation in Amogy as we continue to work towards full commercialisation of our innovative ammonia technology in the maritime industry.”
“As we get closer to bringing our system to market, it is critical to solve unique safety challenges for the design and operation of ammonia-fuelled vessels, and our team is committed to working with key partners, such as Lloyd’s Register, to enable its safe adoption by the industry.”
This week, Amogy entered into an agreement with commodity trader Trafigura to study the use of ammonia as a carrier to transport clean hydrogen from point of production to point of consumption.
