The VPS Maress Summer Campaign brings together 12 vessel operators and 300 OSVs, using use data insights to maximise fuel savings and minimise ship emissions
It’s not often that a dozen companies that compete tooth and nail in the OSV sector come together around a common cause. But for the last three years that has been the case when it comes to VPS Maress Summer Campaign.
This annual campaign, which incorporates a friendly competition, brings together 12 publicly traded and privately held vessel operators who employ the VPS Maress digital decarbonisation platform to track, manage and trial fuel and emissions reductions strategies during a 90-day period. Maress is a cloud-based software that analyses data from vessels to provide actionable insights into fuel consumption and emissions reductions.
Now in its third year, the award-winning effort is led by VPS, which says the campaign allows crews to test, learn, refine and innovate, in respect to improving vessel operational efficiencies and reducing fuel consumption, without compromising safety.
The VPS Maress Summer Campaign was voted by the OSV industry as the winner of the OSJ Environmental Award 2024.
So, what do you get when you combine 12 offshore ship operators, 300 OSVs and one common goal? The answer is fuel savings of 3,755 metric tonnes (mt) and a corresponding reduction of CO2 emissions of nearly 12,000 metric tonnes, during the three months from the beginning of June to until the end of August.
On average, the participating vessels improved their efficiency by more than 10%, according to VPS.
Through this friendly competition, OSVs compete for the top honours as the most improved of their type, either platform supply vessel (PSV), anchor-handling tug supply (AHTS) vessel or construction support vessel (CSV), and in the process, gain valuable insight using data to develop best practices for reducing fuel consumption and emissions.
This year’s top-performing vessels by category were: AHTS Domingue Tide (Tidewater), which improved by 27.6%, CSV Volantis (Havila Subsea & Renewables), 26.1%, PSV Springer Tide (Tidewater), 30.9% and Others Stril Poseidon (Simon Møkster Shipping), 27.0%. An online leaderboard shows the complete standings.
Of the 300 OSVs entered in the campaign, 74 were battery equipped, totalling 19,953 kWh of capacity.
