Ice-class tugboats have been deployed in a northwest port of Norway to provide coastal towage and emergency response
BOA Tugs, a subsidiary of BOA Offshore, has taken delivery of two new ice-class, azimuth stern drive (ASD) tugs in northwest Norway, enhancing its harbour and coastal towage capabilities and emergency response operations.
BOA Hugin’s delivery was followed by BOA Munin in Norway in November 2024, following their construction in Asia by Damen Shipyards.
These 31-m tugs were built to Damen’s ASD 3010 ICE design with a beam of 11 m, a bollard pull of 60 tonnes and ice class 1A.
BOA said both vessels are “powerful assets for a variety of maritime tasks” and would operate out of Sandnessjøen, Norway, “serving vital roles in port support services, towage and emergency response operations.”
Another ice-class Damen-built tug is on its way to Port of Luleå in Sweden.
Victoria is a 33-m tug with a beam of 12 m, propulsion complying with IMO Tier III emissions standards, and a pull traction of 72 tonnes. Its engines will be ready to run on net-zero biodiesel and these will drive two Steerprop-manufactured controllable-pitch thrusters, which can rotate 360° independently of each other.
Port of Luleå has three ice-breaking tugboats that assist ships in the harbour, and are responsible for ice breaking at the ports of Luleå, Kalix and Piteå, all in the northern part of the Gulf of Bothnia.
Having a fourth tug will enable the fleet owner to keep tugboats stationed in the winter in each of these ports and provide ship handling as it anticipates increasing marine traffic.
