One of the world’s largest owners of tugboats will work with local partners to provide ship handling and towage at a new port being built in northern Africa for cargo transhipment
Boluda Towage and Marsa Maroc Towage will provide shiphandling and docking services at the Nador West Med terminal, which is being built on the Mediterranean coast of Morocco.
This consortium will create a joint subsidiary to manage the towage licence, staff and vessels.
Four newbuild harbour tugs, with a towing capacity of 80 tonnes, will be contructed for €45.0M (US$49.3M), with delivery expected in 2026.
Boluda Towage France, with a stake of 51% in the consortium, and Marsa Maroc (49%), have obtained authorisation to carry out towage and assistance activities in the port of Nador West Med for 20 years, starting in Q4 2026.
Nador West Med is under construction in the Bay of Betoya, located at the estuary of the Kert River, 30 km west of the city of Nador, in the eastern Rif region of northeastern Morocco.
The transhipment port is being constructed due to the rising demand for products and cargo in northern Africa, and the need to move cargo to northern Africa instead of Europe, transhipping loads across the Mediterranean as shipowners attempt to avoid the high cost of the European Union’s emissions trading schemes.
Boluda Towage has a strong position in the vibrant towage sector in the Mediterranean with tugs operating in several ports in Spain, France and northern Africa.
Marsa Maroc Towing provides maritime services in the ports of Nador, Al Hoceima, Mohammedia, Safi, Agadir, Laâyoune and Dakhla. It aims to strengthen its position in the Mediterranean and is positioning itself as an integrated international port, maritime and logistics partner.
Marsa Maroc provides port terminal management in Morocco, operating 25 terminals in 11 ports, with total traffic of over 60M tonnes.
