Cyber-security standards introduced by IACS have led to software being upgraded for integrated navigation systems on ships
New class cyber-security standards have led to a ship bridge systems integrator ugrading its software. The improved program for integrated navigation and bridge systems enhances safety, reliability, functionality, smart route planning and handling Automatic Identification System (AIS) targets.
The new version will be used for integrated navigation system (INS), radar and ECDIS applications includes the requirements of the latest display standard IEC 62288 Edition 3 and for resilience from the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) cyber security standards UR E26 & E27.
German bridge systems manufacturer and integrator Anschütz launched version 05.07 for its Synapsis NX software used in INS units and other navigational electronics.
“We have made a great leap forward with the new Synapsis NX software, starting with many elements in the user interfaces and several new functions, up to an improved reliability and, above all, cyber security,” said Anschütz development manager for Synapsis applications Wilko Bruhn.
This includes a new feature to the intuitive prediction mode for ECDIS NX, which the German company said improves smart route planning by enabling new voyages to be created from historical tracks.
Other new functions include simplifying and enhancing handling AIS targets, introducing tidal information, counteracting jamming or spoofing and optional features supporting public authority or naval vessels.
INS functionality has been extended to include security information and event management to identify anomalies in vessel systems and to initiate responses to cyber incidents.
Anschütz also prepared Synapsis NX for integrating additional radar transceivers. In future, the Radar NX application can be combined with classic magnetron and solid-state radars to form a type-approved marine radar system.
“We have put the new software through its paces and are able to roll it out on many of our customers’ vessels together with our integration partners,” said Mr Bruhn.
In an INS, Synapsis NX software runs on standardised hardware components and manages all central functions of the bridge system, such as data management, alarm management, configuration management or the new services for cyber security.
Maritime Decarbonisation, Europe: Conference, Awards & Exhibition 2024 address critical environmental issues head-on. Focused on the industry’s energy transition, the conference offers a comprehensive forum for stakeholders across the maritime sector to explore solutions and strategies for achieving low-carbon shipping and zero-emissions shipping.
