Norwegian tugboat owner Buksér og Berging has ordered a fully electric tug from Sanmar Shipyards, to operate in the Port of Oslo from November 2023
Constructed to Robert Allan Ltd’s ElectRA 2200SX design with an expected bollard pull ahead of 45 tonnes and a speed of 11 knots, this 22-m vessel will have a moulded beam of around 11 m and moulded depth of more than 4 m.
It will be powered by 1,718 kWh of batteries, supplying two 1,400-kW electrical motors and Schottel SRP 340 LE fixed-pitch thrusters. On board there will be a Caterpillar C32 switchable marine generator set, complying with IMO Tier III standards for lower NOx and particulate matter emissions, to provide 940 kW of electrical power at 1,800 rpm.
Deck equipment will include a DMT TW-E250 kN fore winch, Data Hidrolik DTH 50-120P tow hook, Palfinger PK11001MC deck crane and Data Hidrolik DTC 4000 EP-L rope reel.
ABS will class this tug and Corvus will supply the lithium-ion energy storage system under its agreement with Sanmar, signed Q4 2021 at Riviera Maritime Media’s TUGTECHNOLOGY conference in London.
Sanmar Shipyards commercial director Ruchan Civgin said this project is one of several electric tugs Sanmar is building for owners.
“We have seen a huge amount of interest in the ElectRA range as tug and towing operators around the world agree that action must be taken to protect the environment and combat climate change,” he said.
“What the advance technology of the ElectRA series of tugs does is to provide them with the means to make this change happen.
“The zero-emissions ElectRA series is a game-changer in the world of ship-handling tugboats, not least in that these tugs’ green credentials have been achieved with no loss of power, performance, strength or versatility.”
The ElectRA 2200SX will be the eighth tug Sanmar has delivered to Buksér og Berging from its shipyards in Turkey.
Previous deliveries included IMO Tier III compliant escort tugs, Bamse and Bob in 2021 and in 2014 and 2015, Borgoy and Bokn, the world’s first two purely LNG-fuelled tugboats.
