A container ship owner is investing in hardware for communications over low-Earth orbiting satellites as part of an integrated connectivity network
CMA CGM is purchasing terminals for its fleet of container ships to connect with Eutelsat’s OneWeb low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellites.
Hardware will be installed on more than 300 CMA CGM vessels over the next nine months, and LEO communications will be provided through a multi-year agreement as part of a broader hybrid network.
Marseille, France-headquartered CMA CGM will benefit from high-throughput, low-latency, secure connectivity over OneWeb, enabling real-time data exchange, cloud-based operational and commercial applications and enhanced services for seafarers.
“Through this partnership, CMA CGM continues to strengthen its global connectivity framework in support of reliable and secure maritime operations,” said CMA CGM group executive vice president and chief finance officer Ramon Fernandez.
“The integration of OneWeb’s LEO services contributes to the robustness of our fleetwide connectivity, supporting operational efficiency and crew welfare,” he said. “It also aligns with our commitment to trusted solutions and to strengthening digital sovereignty, while reflecting a pragmatic, long-term approach to connectivity that meets our industrial, performance and sustainability objectives.”
Paris-headquartered Marlink will integrate OneWeb hardware and services into its hybrid connectivity network on these container ships during 2026.
CMA CGM ships will have very small aperture terminals (VSAT) to connect with Ku-band geostationary orbiting (GEO) satellites for communications, but at a higher latency than over the LEO constellation.
Marlink’s purpose-built edge platform, XChange NextGen, will enable a seamless transition between communications links during voyages.
This platform will enable higher levels of cyber security, internet-of-things data collection and transmission to cloud services and a centralised, fleetwide network orchestration.
“By integrating OneWeb into CMA CGM’s connectivity ecosystem, we are supporting a robust, future-proof solution that meets the growing demand for high-performance, low-latency connectivity at sea,” said Eutelsat chief executive Jean-Francois Fallacher.
CMA CGM operates a fleet of more than 650 vessels serving over 420 ports worldwide, and has been an anchor shareholder of Eutelsat since 2022.
“We are jointly leading the transition into the multi-LEO future,” said Marlink group chief executive Erik Ceuppens. "As digitalisation becomes an increasingly critical business priority for the maritime industry, we are pleased to equip CMA CGM with a resilient, next-generation network solution, including Eutelsat OneWeb, that enhances operational efficiency, safety, and decarbonisation across its global fleet.”
