A container vessel and a bulk carrier have collided in Vietnam, resulting in significant damage to both ships and an oil spill into a nearby river
According to the Vietnam Maritime and Waterway Administration, the collision occurred on 25 April just before 23:00 local time on the Saigon–Vung Tau waterway. The vessels involved were 2018-built, 2,800-TEU KMTC Surabaya and 36,679-dwt, 2015-built Handysize bulk carrier Glengyle. MarineTraffic data shows KMTC Surabaya was en route to Hong Kong, while Glengyle was heading to Ho Chi Minh Port.
MarineTraffic reported the container ship sustained damage to its bow, while the bulk carrier suffered a breach at the stern, resulting in an oil spill into the Long Tau River.
The Vietnam Maritime and Waterway Administration noted the collision resulted in no casualties and did not disrupt operations on the shipping route. Authorities have initiated oil spill response efforts, deploying tugboats and specialised equipment to the scene.
According to Equasis data, Panama-flagged KMTC Surabaya is owned by Japanese shipowner Nissen Kaiun, while Hong Kong-flagged Glengyle is listed under Uni Ships & Management.
