US-based Crowley and Esvagt in Denmark are to build and operate a service operation vessel (SOV) for a long-term charter with Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy on the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project in the US
Under the contract, Crowley will manage and crew the SOV. Esvagt will support Crowley with design, construction, crew training and operation services as part of a joint venture, CREST Wind, which was created in 2021.
The vessel will have accommodation for 80 crew and technicians. Consistent with federal law, the vessel will be US-built. It is due to enter service on the CVOW offshore windfarm, which is being built by Dominion Energy, in 2026.
Crowley Wind Services senior vice president and general manager Bob Karl said, “This vessel marks another significant milestone in our combined capability to develop, construct and serve the US offshore wind market and America’s renewable energy needs. We appreciate Siemens Gamesa’s trust in our capabilities, and we look forward to continuing our work to develop purpose-built vessels to meet sustainable energy demands in the US.”
Esvagt chief strategy and commercial officer Soren Karas said, “This first contract in the US is a landmark event for Esvagt in our quest to help drive the green transition. We are excited to bring our decades of offshore wind experience to bear in a new market through our CREST joint venture.”
Dominion Energy plans to use 176 14.7-MW Siemens Gamesa wind turbines on the windfarm. Siemens Gamesa chief executive service Americas David Hickey described the deal as “an important step in the development of a skilled offshore workforce in America. This charter will enable us to provide top-tier service for the CVOW project with a US-built vessel,” he concluded.
The HAV 832 SOV design from Norway will have a length overall of 88 m, breadth of 17 m and maximum draft of around 6 m.
