Taihan in South Korea, which is seeking more business from the burgeoning Asian offshore wind market, held a groundbreaking ceremony on 25 September for a new submarine cable plant
The groundbreaking took place in the Godae District of the Asan National Industrial Complex in Dangjin, Chungcheongnam-do.
Submarine Plant 2 is designed to manufacture 640 kV high-voltage direct current) and 400 kV high-voltage alternating current submarine cables. The plant will begin operations by 2027.
Submarine Plant 2 will be built adjacent to Submarine Plant 1 on a site of approximately 215,000 m2 and will have a 180-m high vertical continuous vulcanization facility.
Taihan has steadily strengthened its competitiveness in submarine and HVDC cables. Having entered the submarine cable business in 2008, the company began construction of Submarine Plant 1 in 2023. It commenced operations in June 2024, with the plant completed in June 2025.
In December 2023, the company also secured Korea’s only cable-laying vessel, Palos, and in July 2025 acquired a specialized submarine cable installation company, securing turnkey capabilities that cover the entire value chain from design and manufacturing to transport, installation, and maintenance.
