The Danish Energy Agency has issued an establishment permit to Jammerland Bay Nearshore, part of European Energy, for the Jammerland Bugt Kystnær offshore windfarm
The permit for the project, which involves the installation of 16 offshore wind turbines south of Kalundborg between the peninsulas of Asnæs and Reersø, also covers the subsea cabling for the project and the export cable. The turbines will have a height of 256 m and the project will have a total capacity of 240 MW.
The landfall cables for the windfarm will be brought ashore at Østrup, after which they will be routed to a new transformer station at the Kalundborg refinery. The connection point will be Energinet’s existing high-voltage station at Asnæsværket.
Jammerland Bay Nearshore applied for an establishment permit on 15 March 2024. It first applied to develop the project under the Danish ‘open door’ scheme in February 2012.
The establishment permit includes several environmental conditions that are designed to protect bats and porpoises. The wind turbines will be required to stop or rotate slowly after sunset when the wind is below 6 m/s, from 1 April to 31 October. The so-called ‘cut-in-speed’ requirement will reduce the risk that bats are adversely affected by the operation of the windfarm.
In addition, the establishment permit requires the use of bubble curtains when the monopile foundations for the project are being installed, to reduce noise and reduce any impact on porpoises in the area.
The Danish Energy Agency also expects the developer to initiate a monitoring programme for the windfarm to provide greater understanding about the impact of offshore wind turbines on the marine environment.
European Energy noted approval for Jammerland Bugt comes weeks after it also secured a permit for the Lillebaelt Syd offshore windfarm. Together, the projects will deliver a combined capacity of 405 MW.
The company said approval of the projects also paves the way for the finalisation of its partnership with TotalEnergies, who will become the majority owner of Lillebaelt Syd and Jammerland Bugt as part of a broader agreement to develop offshore wind in Denmark, Finland and Sweden.
