GMT - ONLINEDoosan Fuel Cell will partner with oil major Shell and Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering following a letter of intent signed by the three companies
The companies will build a consortium for developing and testing marine fuel cells and intend to add shipowners, shipbuilders and maritime classification societies to the consortium.
Doosan Fuel Cell will apply low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), which are under development, to developing marine SOFC systems, manufacturing and supplying marine SOFCs and providing maintenance services. KSOE will install fuel cells and modify and integrate systems for marine applications.
Shell will be in charge of ship orders and management, operation and applicability project management.
The companies plan to operate a vessel powered by a 600-kW marine SOFC as an auxiliary power unit over the course of a year so they can develop an optimal system. Doosan Fuel Cell is aiming for marine certification by 2024 and commercialisation the following year.
Doosan Fuel Cell chief executive Jeff Jeong said, “In response to calls for deep cuts in greenhouse emissions from international shipping, we will remain committed to commercialising marine fuel cells in 2025.”
“In addition, Doosan is determined to achieve results swiftly in our new businesses, such as mobility and hydrogen refuelling stations, not to mention the SOFC development.”
Having completed an SOFC industrialised factory layout design and site selection in the Saemanguem industrial complex last year, Doosan Fuel Cell will also build a 50-MW factory by 2023, followed by commercialisation of stationary SOFCs in 2024 and marine SOFCs in 2025.
