Moteurs Baudouin introduced engines specifically for marine applications as the French company grows its share of the newbuild tugboat market
It presented the 12M55 main propulsion engine at Riviera Maritime Media’s 27th International Tug & Salvage (ITS) Convention & Exhibition in Dubai, UAE, on 21-23 May 2024.
This was designed purely for marine applications with individual cylinder heads and inspection hatches to simplify maintenance even in small enginerooms.
A 12M55 engine incorporates an electronically controlled common rail system and has 12 cylinders in V formation, a bore of 180 mm and stroke of 215 mm, a total displacement of 65.6 litres and an idle speed of 600 rpm.
This range has a rated power of 1,800 kW at 1,600 rpm to 2,536 kW at 1,800 rpm for IMO Tier II compliance. If a selective catalytic reduction unit is installed to minimise NOx emissions, it could be IMO Tier III compliant.
There are four turbochargers, two per bank, to provide rapid response and high torque and power to provide tugboats with a high bollard pull for handling large ships in harbours and terminals, said Baudouin marine business development manager Christopher Cowan.
The 12M55 engine is ready, and certified by Bureau Veritas, for combusting hydrogenated vegetable oil, which is increasingly used in the towage sector.
Baudouin also featured a 6W105S generator set at ITS 2024. This 6.7-litre capacity engine was built for consistent power output and streamlined serviceability with accessible components and unit cylinder heads for easy maintenance.
It has a bore of 105 mm, a stroke of 130 mm, idle speed of 650 rpm, a range of 120 kWe at 1,500 rpm producing 150 kVA at 50 Hz to 148 kWe at 1,800 rpm generating 185 kVA at 60 Hz.
Baudouin said this has an extended mean time between overhauls, which means cost effective operations over its lifespan.
