Prolonged oil production in three fields in West Africa has resulted in ExxonMobil extending leases on two FPSOs that require refurbishment, and GEPetrol has acquired an FPSO from the same owner
SBM Offshore has divested a floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel and secured charter extensions for two others in West Africa.
ExxonMobil plans to prolong oil and gas production from two deepwater fields offshore Angola as it has found more reserves in Block 15. As a consequence, the US oil major has extended its lease for two FPSOs producing oil from these fields for another five years.
SBM Offshore’s FPSOs Mondo and Saxi Batuque will now be chartered by ExxonMobil affiliate Esso Exploration Angola until 2032.
SBM said the agreement includes life-extension work, including replacing equipment and refurbishment to maintain high safety standards and ensure their operation throughout the extended contract term, starting in 2026.
Both Bahamas-flagged FPSOs were converted from very large crude carriers in 2007 as part of the Kizomba C development, and have been operating for 18 years in Block 15.
FPSO Mondo was originally 1975-built Stena Constellation and FPSO Saxi Batuque was 1977-built Litiopa.
Esso Exploration operates the Kizomba fields in block 15 with BP-Eni joint venture Azule, Equinor and Angolan state energy company Sonangol.
In Equatorial Guinea, SBM has divested its equity interest in the lease and operating entities of the FPSO Aseng to state-backed energy group GEPetrol.
SBM said this sale is in line with its strategy to rationalise its lease and operate portfolio, as per other recent transactions.
FPSO Aseng has been producing oil from the deepwater field in block I since 2011 under a lease agreement for a minimum of 15 years.
At that time, SBM formed a joint venture with GEPetrol with SBM having 60% ownership.
Also in 2025, SBM divested its ownership in two FPSOs, Prosperity and Liza Destiny, operating in the Stabroek block offshore Guyana to ExxonMobil.
