TECO 2030 and Pherousa Green Shipping AS (PGS) have signed a groundbreaking agreement to supply up to six state-of-the-art, zero-emissions Ultramax dry bulk carriers, each with a capacity of approximately 63,000 dwt
These vessels will be equipped with 12 MW of TECO 2030 fuel cells for their main propulsion systems. Using TECO 2030 fuel cells ensures seamless operations with zero emissions, marking a significant step towards achieving a more sustainable and environmentally friendly shipping industry.
The comprehensive green package, valued at approximately €23M (US$25M) per vessel, includes the delivery of a complete system of fuel cells installed on a skid solution, and power and automation equipment.
The estimated shipment to the shipyard is slated to begin early-2026, with delivery of the first vessel expected mid-2026.
With a strong commitment to innovation and sustainability, TECO 2030 will produce the fuel-cell systems at its state-of-the-art Innovation Center in Narvik, Norway, set to commence production by the end of 2024.
In a groundbreaking combination of technologies, the TECO 2030 fuel cell system will be integrated with PGT’s ammonia-to-hydrogen cracker. This innovative approach solves the prevailing challenges associated with hydrogen storage and infrastructure as a marine fuel, thus enabling zero-emissions deepsea shipping.
By opting for hydrogen fuel cells in conjunction with the ammonia cracker, shipowners have the flexibility to transition from ammonia to hydrogen seamlessly, mitigating investment risks.
This approach not only positions ammonia as a viable hydrogen carrier but also expands its economic trade as a preferred fuel in the shipping industry, complementing its traditional role in the chemical and fertiliser sector.
This collaboration represents a significant milestone in sustainable maritime transport and underscores the commitment to environmental stewardship in the shipping industry.
