A subsidiary of Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) has bought platform supply vessel (PSV) MMA Leveque from MMA Offshore for US$7.75M with the intention of refitting the vessel to burn green ammonia
FFI plans to convert the 75-m vessel to dual-fuel engine technology, with the objective of operating almost totally on green ammonia. Built to DNV class, diesel-electric MMA Leveque is fitted with four 1,291 kW Cummins KTA50-D (M1) diesel gensets. A subsidiary of Fortescue Metals Group, FFI plans to operate MMA Leveque on green ammonia in a pilot before the end of 2022.
In November at Transport Day at COP26 in Glasgow, Fortescue Future Industries chairman Dr Andrew Forrest highlighted the company’s collaboration with MMA Offshore on the groundbreaking conversion project. He said MMA Leveque would “show the shipping industry the power of a vessel fuelled by green ammonia in real-world conditions.”
Fortescue said this conversion “brings the shipping industry much closer to becoming carbon neutral well before 2040 with only entrenched industry practices slowing global progress.”
MMA Leveque joins Fortescue’s broader fleet of trucks, locomotives, a drill rig and other mobile equipment undergoing a technical transition to operate on green fuels.
In 2021, FFI’s Green Fleet Team reported successful combustion of blended ammonia fuel in a two-stroke locomotive, laying the groundwork for the use of 100% green ammonia.
MMA managing director David Ross, said “We are excited to continue working with FFI, with MMA Leveque now joining Fortescue Future Industries, where the goal is to transform the vessel to run almost totally on green ammonia.”
The timeline for FFI’s green ammonia conversion puts it ahead of three being undertaken by Wärtsilä in Norway, two with Eidesvik and one with Simon Møkster. Two of these projects involve retrofitting ammonia-powered fuel cells in PSVs, including the ShipFC consortium project, which is converting the PSV Viking Energy. The ammonia fuel-cell system will be installed in Viking Energy late 2023. The third involves using ammonia in an LNG dual-fuel engine.
