A bulk carrier and tanker owner is investing in digital tools for to monior machinery in real time to reduce maintenance costs
Great Eastern Shipping is using a digital platform to continuously monitor the condition of onboard machinery and to analyse performance data.
India’s largest private fleet owner of bulker carriers and tankers required higher levels of digitalisation and automation for technical fleet management and maintenance processes to reduce costs and improve reliability. It has adopted internet of things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI) and data analytics to enhance asset lifecycles, reduce downtime and to introduce more cost-effective maintenance.
“The adoption of real-time insights, predictive diagnostics, and AI-driven optimisation is a strategic move to reinforce our commitment to operational excellence and sustainability,” said Great Eastern Shipping head technical and projects Imtiyaz Mulla. “With cutting-edge technology, we are advancing towards a more intelligent and efficient fleet management system.”
Great Eastern is implementing the digital platform from Singapore-based Smart Ship Hub (SSH) for real-time condition-based monitoring of all vessels and key machinery. It will use SSH’s analytics and intelligent automation to track vessel and machinery health, facilitating proactive intervention and reducing maintenance costs. Automated performance-based alerts and alarms will support management and crew to optimise vessel operations and minimise the risk of unexpected breakdowns.
AI-driven analytics will provide predictive diagnostics and data-driven intelligence to extend asset and machinery life and reduce downtime.
SSH’s digital modules cover main-engine health monitoring and performance; diesel generator management; fuel efficiency through predictive analytics; hull and propeller performance optimisation; compliance monitoring and risk mitigation.
Additionally, the platform’s carbon footprint management provides exact emissions tracking for Great Eastern to meet the latest global environmental standards. By integrating SSH’s platform, all vessel data is aggregated into a single, unified source of information, thus standardising operational reporting.
