Shipowner H-Line is collaborating with HD Hyundai to develop AI-based autonomous, eco-friendly ships
H-Line Shipping and HD Hyundai have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (KSOE) and Avikus to jointly develop artificial intelligence (AI) and autonomous vessel technologies.
The South Korean owner of ships transporting iron ore, coal and LNG intends to expand its use of AI technology across all areas of vessel operations, including autonomous navigation, engine automation, optimal route planning and cargo handling.
Its MoU was signed at HD Hyundai’s global research and development centre in Pangyo, South Korea and will enable these technologies to be tested on ships in pilot projects.
H-Line Shipping expects AI and autonomous technologies to maximise the operational performance of its vessels, while reducing fuel consumption and emissions and increasing vessel safety.
Under this agreement, HD Hyundai will manage the integration and application of these technologies by combining Avikus’s autonomous navigation HiNAS solution and HD Hyundai Marine Solution’s optimal routeing service OceanWise with HD KSOE’s AI-based cargo management system AI-CHS.
H-Line Shipping will provide an LNG carrier for the technology’s sea trials, verification and class certifications.
“Technology that transports cargo via the most optimal routes using AI is a critical factor in determining a shipping company’s competitiveness,” said H-Line Shipping chief operating officer Ho-Dong Seo. “We expect this collaboration further to enhance the efficiency and safety of our fleet operations.”
Expected benefits of applying AI-based technologies early include reducing costs across the entire ship lifecycle – from design and construction to operation and maintenance – and pre-empting strengthening environmental regulations set by IMO and regional regulators.
“This partnership is the starting point for AI-based digital innovation that transcends the boundaries between shipbuilding and shipping,” said HD KSOE chief technology officer Kwang-Pil Chang. “It will serve as an important milestone in setting the standard for the eco-friendly ships of the future.”
