Five companies headquartered in South Korea have agree to accelerate the deployment of digital solutions in maritime industries
Korean Register (KR) has brought together a consortium of providers in South Korea to drive forward digitalisation in the nation’s maritime industry.
The classification society is collaborating with Avikus, LAB021, Mapsea and Marineworks under a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to jointly develop and apply digital solutions to support efficient ship operations, sector decarbonisation and ensure compliance with global rules.
Under this agreement, KR and its partners will research and develop technologies for smart, autonomous and low-carbon shipping; exchange digital technologies to enhance maritime safety and environmental protection; and co-ordinate business development, marketing and public relations.
“Digital transformation is a vital challenge for the maritime industry, one that requires collaboration across diverse technologies and expertise,” said Korean Register senior executive vice president Sungho Yoon.
To this collaboration, Avikus will deliver its autonomous technology that uses artificial intelligence to support seafarers for safer navigation; Marineworks will provide its customised electronic navigational charts used in ECDIS, and its fleet management systems; while LAB021 will offer its ship operation optimisation and environmental compliance solutions; and Mapsea its data analytics and real-time navigation services.
“We are working with leading Korean software companies to ensure that digital solutions enhance ship safety, comply with international standards, and support clients worldwide as the industry navigates digital and environmental transitions.”
