HAV Design in Norway has confirmed it has signed a contract with the shipyard that is to build a service operation vessel (SOV) for Crest, the joint venture between Esvagt and Crowley
Once completed, the SOV will operate on the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) project on the US east coast.
The contract marks the US breakthrough for HAV Design, which is the first European ship designer to be awarded a contract for an SOV for the US market.
HAV Design vice president of sales Gisle Vinjevoll Thrane said, “We have designed and developed numerous SOVs, but this is the first time we have designed a vessel for the US market.
“We are confident in the operational benefits our vessel will bring to the table and believe this contract can open the door for further work in the US.”
The hybrid vessel will be of HAV 832 SOV design and will be constructed by Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding at Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. HAV Design’s contract is with Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding.
The ABS-class vessel will be 88 m long with a breadth of 18 m. It will transport 60 windfarm technicians and sail under US flag. The ship will go into service in 2026.
