A US-based owner of inland waterways towboats and barges has outlined plans to acquire the river division of a rival operator to expand its fleet and services along inland waterways
Hines Furlong Line is preparing to acquire the river division of Campbell Transportation to expand its fleet and extend its operations along US inland waterways.
Nashville, Tennessee-based Hines Furlong Line expects the transaction to be completed in Q1 2026, subject to regulatory approvals and closing conditions, when it will own and/or manage 64 inland towboats and 870 hopper and tank barges, and oversee two shipyards.
“Together, Hines Furlong Line and Campbell Transportation’s river division will strengthen overall inland river operations and extend capacity along the Ohio River,” said Hines Furlong Line, which will maintain its existing operations in Nashville, Tennessee and Paducah, Kentucky.
Campbell Transportation said it would focus on its coastal towage operations after completion of the transaction by setting up its US Gulf division as a standalone company, based in Houston, Texas.
The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania-headquartered company expanded its fleet in 2023 by purchasing the majority of the marine assets of Oklahoma-based midstream energy company NGL Energy Partners.
Campbell was also investing in its towboat fleet through repower projects and upgrades to continue their operations for decades longer.
