Inmarsat Maritime has launched NexusWave, a fully managed connectivity service for the industry
NexusWave is a fully managed service that integrates multiple high-speed networks in real time – Global Xpress (GX) Ka-band, low-earth orbit (LEO) services, as-available coastal LTE service, with an additional layer of L-band for resiliency – for faster connectivity and ’enterprise grade’ firewall security.
NexusWave will also integrate the next-generation ultra-high capacity high-speed ViaSat-3 Ka-band service, following expected entry into service in 2025.
Inmarsat president, Ben Palmer said, “Maritime operators face ever-growing demand for data consumption and speeds on board their vessels, coupled with the operational challenges of connecting worldwide while ensuring the security and efficiency of their communications.”
Mr Palmer said the commercial imperative for NexusWave is pitched at resolving concerns over reliable communications at sea, the industry’s ongoing digitalisation and crew welfare initiatives. The service is designed to provide operators with unlimited data across the globe.
The move is Inmarsat’s response to SpaceX’s Starlink service, and a number of smaller players in the LEO segment like Eutelstat, which has disrupted the maritime connectivity market. Over the last few years, Riviera Maritime Media has reported on the widespread adoption of Starlink and other LEO providers ushering in a new era of maritime high-speed connectivity.
At sea, vessels have traditionally had far lower speeds than terrestrial networks. And even though ships often spend a significant chunk of their time near land, congestion can make connectivity unreliable.
Last year, Viasat acquired Inmarsat, something Mr Palmer credited for helping to create the conditions for the development of NexusWave.
“Meeting all these requirements typically relies on multiple, disjointed solutions, resulting in a complex patchwork of data caps, speeds and coverage, in addition to unverifiable cyber security,” he said
NexusWave is supported globally and fully managed by Inmarsat, who also provide technical assistance, and said the service will be continuously enhanced over time.
