A partnership between a German shipmanager and a Norwegian investment manager has launched a maritime information technology provider, with 400 vessels already on board
Wilhelmsen Ship Management and MPC Capital have formed a 50/50 joint venture to deliver secure, future-ready IT systems to fleets of ships, including commercial carriers and offshore support vessels.
Waterway IT will provide enterprise-grade IT services, connectivity and cyber security on merchant ships, with around 400 vessels already signed up.
It will manage modular vessel IT stacks, hybrid connectivity, cyber security, and provide global support as an integrated service, with all systems designed for maritime operations and centrally managed.
This comes as the maritime industry goes through a structural shift towards further adopting digitalisation, ultra-fast internet connectivity and faces greater levels of cyber interference.
“The maritime industry is undergoing a fundamental digital shift,” said Waterway IT chief executive Sondre Mortensvik.
“Reliable and secure onboard IT infrastructure is essential for modern vessel operations,” he said.
“With Waterway IT, we are creating a global platform with the scale and expertise to support customers in this transformation.”
Waterway IT’s team of 45 IT professionals will serve around 70 customers, providing global coverage from maritime and technology hubs in Hamburg (Germany), Oslo (Norway), Kuala Lumpur (Malaysia), Manila (Philippines) and Bangalore (India).
“Our approach removes one of the biggest challenges for shipowners: managing complex and fragmented onboard IT systems,” said Waterway IT chief commercial officer Florian zum Felde.
“Instead of dealing with multiple vendors, inconsistent systems and unpredictable IT costs, customers receive a standardised and fully managed IT environment from a single provider.”
Wilhelmsen is one of the world’s largest third-party shipmanagers with a portfolio of about 400 vessels and 15,000 active seafarers.
It provides technical and crew management services for various vessel segments, including vehicle, container and gas carriers, dry bulk shipping, roro and offshore support vessels.
