Turkey’s Sanmar Shipyards has delivered a second electric-powered tug to Canadian operator HaiSea Marine
HaiSea Marine is a joint venture majority-owned by the Native American tribe Haisla Nation in partnership with Seaspan ULC, which has a major contract provide harbour and escort tugboat services to tankers calling at LNG Canada’s new export facility in Kitimat, British Columbia.
Harbour tug Haisea Wee’Git is the second of three ElectRA all-electric tugs built by Sanmar. Haisea Wamis, delivered last month, was the first.
The tugs will work in tandem with two dual-fuel (LNG and diesel) escort tugs also built by Sanmar. Haisea Brave, the third electric tug, will be delivered later this year.
Like its sisters ships, Haisea Wee’Git is based on the exclusive-to-Sanmar ElectRA 2800SX design from Vancouver-based naval architects, Robert Allan Ltd. With approximately 70 tonnes of bollard pull, a top speed of 12 knots and 6,000 kWh of battery capacity, it will perform all ship berthing and unberthing missions on battery power alone.
The tug can use the hydroelectric power generated in Kitimat to recharge from dedicated shore-charging facilities at its berth between jobs.
“Emissions-free harbour tugs are no longer just a dream. At Sanmar, we are delighted to be at the forefront of this change. As you can imagine, we have had a lot of interest in the ElectRA series from operators around the world,” said Sanmar Shipyards chairman Ali Gurun.
“The delivery of Haisea Wee’Git is another marker along the road to a sustainable, environmentally friendly tug and towing industry. The importance of the delivery of these game-changing tugs to our entire industry cannot be over-estimated.”
Once delivered, the fleet will make the voyage up the Douglas Channel to Kitimat where it will be based to provide ship-assist and escort towing services to LNG carriers calling at LNG Canada’s new export facility.
Progress continues on the 14-mta LNG Canada export facility, which the company stated is 85% complete as of July.
Sanmar will deliver four more ElectRA tugs this year: two will be delivered to South American operator SAAM Towage, one to Bukser og Berging in Norway and one to Sanmar’s own fleet in Turkey.
