Lomar Shipping’s subsidiary is testing an advanced pilot assistance system on a chemical tanker in collaboration with Lomarlabs
Lomar Shipping’s CB Tankers is trialling APAS’ advanced pilot assistance system on a managed chemical tanker to provide intelligence to its navigators.
The London, UK-headquartered group’s corporate technology venture team, Lomarlabs, is working in collaboration with Mythos AI to trial APAS on 183-m, 27,250-gt CB Pacific for a year to provide greater insight for bridge watchkeepers. The technology will be trialled for a year on the Portugal flag, 2020-built tanker to validate its performance in live operational settings.
Mythos AI’s APAS integrates directly with ship radars to process information streams and provide a single, prioritised alert to the crew to improve navigational awareness and safety. Driven by artificial intelligence (AI), this technology provides collision prediction and supports compliance with IMO’s COLREGs.
Bremen, Germany-headquartered CB Tankers’ CB Pacific was selected for this testbed due to its stable routeing and Furuno radar setup.
“Real innovation happens in real-time operations, port calls, drydocks and sea trials,” said Lomarlabs managing director Stylianos Papageorgiou. “Mythos AI’s radar-first architecture and modular autonomy approach show what is possible when we meet founders halfway – not just with capital, but with trust, time and access to tonnage.”
Lomarlabs provided technical oversight, vessel access and project support for this initiative.
The pilot supports Mythos AI’s commercial roadmap, which has been bolstered by deals with commercial operators in the US and growing interest from within the defence sector.
“This is one of several active commercial projects for Mythos AI and marks the first operational deployment of our APAS on a tanker,” said Mythos AI chief executive Geoff Douglass.
“Our goal is not to replace the crew; it is to equip them with next-generation capabilities. By integrating our proprietary radar perception, machine vision and intelligent alerting with the vessel’s dynamics, APAS transforms complex situations into clear, actionable decisions, enhancing both safety and operational resilience.”
This pilot will help Mythos AI to explore regulatory pathways with class societies.
“Partnering with Lomarlabs and CB Tankers enables APAS to capture and retain the expertise of master mariners and the navigational norms of ports worldwide, accelerating the system’s maturity,” said Mr Douglass.
“Together, we are validating performance at scale and laying the groundwork for broader fleetwide adoption.”
