A deadly fire on board passenger ship World Legacy has been extinguished and passengers have been evacuated
A hotel ferry that transits between Singapore and Malaysia caught fire while en route to Singapore, claiming the life of a crew member.
According to statements from Singapore’s government, the fire occurred on deck nine of the Liberia-registered passenger vessel World Legacy and has been extinguished by Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) marine firefighters.
The deceased crew member, an Indonesian national, has been transferred ashore, Singapore’s Maritime Port Authority (MPA) said.
"The fire aboard passenger vessel World Legacy, which occurred at about 4:00am (Singapore time) this morning, has been extinguished and the vessel is in a stable condition. All 271 passengers, including 139 Singaporeans, are safe," the MPA said.
All passengers have been safely evacuated to HarbourFront Ferry Terminal, with SCDF paramedics and emergency medical technicians on site to provide medical support.
Classification society surveyors engaged by the vessel’s owners will board the ship to assess the extent of damage and the repairs to be carried out before returning to service. Based on preliminary investigations, the MPA said the fire occurred at the lounge area on deck nine of the vessel, and confirmed that investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
"A core crew will remain on board for safety checks and essential operations, while the rest of the crew will disembark progressively. MPA has established a safety zone around the vessel and is issuing navigational broadcasts to advise passing vessels to keep clear. The cause of the fire is under investigation," the organisation said.
