An Italian owner is preparing to welcome two newbuild reverse stern drive tugs to an expanding Adriatic port to handle and dock ultra-large container ships
Damen Shipyards has delivered two reverse stern drive (RSD) tugs to Italy-based Tripmare after their construction at the Damen Song Cam Shipyard in Vietnam.
These two tugboats, Captain Cat and Med Rigel, are scheduled to arrive in Italy in August to enhance towage in the port of Trieste. Built to Damen’s RSD Tugs 2513 design, they feature propulsion compliant with IMO Tier III emissions standards and offer 80 tonnes of bollard pull.
Tripmare ordered these tugs from Damen to increase its capabilities to handle the large ships calling at Trieste such as MSC’s ultra large 24,000-TEU container ship Nicola Mastro.
The new tugs will replace an existing tractor tug and an azimuth stern drive (ASD) tugboat in the Tripmare fleet.
“We look forward to welcoming these innovative tugs to Trieste,” said Tripmare chief executive Alberto Cattaruzza. “We are introducing these modern, powerful and compact tugs that prioritise environmental sustainability.”
Damen has tailored its standard design of its RSD Tug 2513 for Tripmare by including a FiFi1 fire-fighting system, oil recovery capabilities, a third generator and an NOx reduction system to lower emissions in port.
“These two RSD tugs symbolise a new era of synergy, empowering Tripmare to streamline its fleet operations without compromising on towage configuration preferences between ASD and tractor tugs,” said Damen Shipyards global sales advisor Antonio Marte.
Damen explained how these RSD tugs combine elements from both tractor and ASD tugs in one vessel, enabling an “always bow-first operation”.
These 25-m, 330-gt vessels have a beam of 13 m, a maximum draught of 6 m, a top speed of around 13 knots, accommodation for six crew members and capacity to store 77 m3 of fuel, 8 m3 of fresh water and 6 m3 of sewage.
They have a Damen patented twin-fin skeg and optimised hull lines for manoeuvrability and stability during ship handling and towage.
Damen includes several features to improve safety and crew welfare including shatter-proof glazing on the wheelhouse to protect crew in the event of a towing line snapping, clutter-free decks to reduce accidents and a spring-mounted superstructure to lower noise and vibration.
These vessels have a hybrid cooling system, combining box and keel cooling of machinery and a Triton vessel monitoring unit for real-time performance tracking, increased efficiency and reduced emissions.
