A Greek shipowner has ordered new escort tugboats from one of the nation’s shipyards to bolster its towage and salvage operations
Megatugs Salvage & Towage has ordered a pair of escort tugboats from Greek shipbuilder ONEX Shipyards & Technologies Group, marking the country’s return to shipbuilding.
Two 28-m escort tugs will be built at Elefsina Shipyard in Greece, with options for two more. Built primarily for escorting, towing, manoeuvring and docking LNG and LPG carriers at terminals in Greece, they will also be prepared to respond to fire, pollution and other maritime emergencies.
"The ONEX-Megatugs partnership enhances maritime security, operational readiness and protection of the marine environment, while creating a stable and sustainable production base for the Greek shipbuilding industry,” said ONEX.
“For ONEX, this is the first new shipbuilding contract with Greek customers in decades, a measurable result of the restart of the shipyards and the investment in modern production lines, know-how and human resources.”
ONEX will build these azimuth stern drive tugs to a Robert Allan Ltd RAstar 2800 design, with a moulded beam of 13 m, an overall length of 28 m, a draught of 6 m, a forward bollard pull of 85 tonnes, a top speed of just over 12 knots and accommodation for eight crew members.
Propulsion will come from two MAN 16V 175D main engines, each developing 2,560 kW, linked to exhaust aftertreatment for compliance with IMO Tier III emissions standards. These will drive two Schottel rudderpropellers of type SRP 490 with a fixed-pitch propeller.
Megatugs said these Bureau Veritas-classed tugs will be suitable for ship escort and manoeuvring, harbour and coastal towage and emergency response. They will have a FiFi1-class fire-fighting system, oil pollution recovery equipment, heavy-duty hydraulic winches and hooks for escort and towing operations, and a sponsoned hullform for increased stability, side manoeuvring, and to escort large ships.
ONEX will build these tugs ready to handle tankers and gas carriers in terminals in Greece, as they will be ATEX Zone 2-compliant for operations in LNG and LPG terminals.
