Japan’s first LNG fuel supply system delivered

The FGSS will be installed on board the first LNG-fuelled pure car carrier currently under construction at Shin Kurushima Toyohashi Shipbuilding. The FGSS consists of LNG fuel tanks, LNG fuel gas supply units and control unit.

It was delivered in modules, which will optimise the design of the cargo space and help the shipyard to shorten installation time. Mitsubishi Shipbuilding provided the shipbuilding yard with engineering and technical support relating to the gas handling of the ship.

The company said the FGSS is expected to improve the environmental performance of the ship “by approximately 40%” to meet the sulphur emission regulations and the energy efficiency of the ship. That figure would exceed IMO EEDI Phase 3 requirements, enforceable in 2025.
Japan’s Ministry of Environment and Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism adopted the ship as the model project to reduce CO₂ emissions by using alternative fuel.

Japan’s energy security strategy has been credited as a driver of innovation in LNG carrier technology.
