A range of new solutions have recently been launched within cruise ship interiors
New products, including glass bonding systems, marine glazing and doors have been launched in the cruise ship market.
Sika Marine recently launched a booster window bonding system into the marine market that makes the production process much faster.
The Sikaflex-268 PowerCure is an accelerated polyurethane adhesive system designed for the marine industry. Curing is accelerated by Sika’s PowerCure technology which makes it largely independent of atmospheric conditions and can be used where fast curing is required. It is suitable for assembly bonding and glazing applications and has outstanding weathering resistance.
A Sika-wide application, this product achieved IMO approval last year, allowing it to enter the cruise ship market.
Highlighting the benefits for the cruise ship market, Sika corporate market field manager marine Michiel Bos tells Passenger Ship Technology, “In the new cruise ship designs, increased viewing lines and larger glass windows are becoming more important every day, leading to more spacious looking areas and higher comfort. This trend leads to very large, heavy windows; installing them takes time and effort. We developed our product to make the installation process much faster.”
Furthermore, glass domes and balustrades are enabled using these adhesives.
Sika paved the way for its Sikaflex-268 PowerCure to be used in maritime when it teamed up with Damen Shipyards to use it on a new FCS7011 fast crew supplier, a vessel which can carry 120 people with a speed of 40 knots.
As part of the PowerCure system, Sika developed a dispenser with a mixing nozzle to apply the adhesive better. Mr Bos calls the new technology “a big step up”. The PowerCure dispenser is built on the latest Milwaukee M18 battery technology and allows for flexible and mobile use. The PowerCure Mixer has an angled nozzle for better ergonomics with the V-cut nozzle.
The Sikaflex-268 PowerCure complements Sikaflex®-296, a high performance, moisture curing elastic gap-filling 1-C polyurethane adhesive also used as a marine glazing adhesive.
Sika works closely with Brombach + Gess, which uses Sikaflex -296 and Sikaflex-295 UV across its applications. “We support them for all marine glazing projects with extensive adhesion tests on the respective paint systems and other substrates, so we can both ensure the highest marine glazing quality standard. Also, as a long-standing partner, they use our Sikaflex-268 PowerCure system more and more. Due to the fast-curing mechanism and final strength, it saves time, making it very useful in refit and repair installations and for large, heavy window bonding applications” comments Mr Bos.

Indeed, Brombach + Gess has launched its BALUSTRADEmove system. Its marketing manager Louisa Schmid explains, “We, at Brombach + Gess, attach great importance to sustainability and offer our customers the possibility to refit existing systems with our products. The BALUSTRADEmove system is one of them which can be used to add-on or retrofit to an existing or newbuilding system. At the same time, BALUSTRADEmove offers improved wind and weather protection of open areas, eg seat or leaning areas, through the installation. Conversely, this means more comfort for passengers. Flexibility of use through individual adjustment is among the many advantages of the system.”
It has also recently brought to market a prefabricated sliding window kit for refurbishment. “We installed our sliding window kit on a cruise ship in the pool area which led to better air flow and the passengers feeling cooler and happier in the hot summer months. The installation took place while in service, which was made possible by our window kit,” says Ms Schmid.
Summing up some of the main trends within cruise shipping refit glass bonding projects, she says, “The main trends in glass bonding projects for cruise ship refit include larger glass surfaces. In parallel, the improved climate values in terms of thermal insulation and solar protection is an important issue in refits.”
Elsewhere, Antti-Teollisuus Oy has launched two new doors: B-15 Fire Door dB(LE+) Single Leaf certification number MEDB000071A and B-15 Fire Door DdB(LE+) Double Leaf certification number MEDB000081U.
Both doors have been developed for high sound reduction purposes. The single leaf door B-15 Fire Door dB(LE+) is targeted for up to Rw=44dB applications and the double door B-15 Fire Door DdB(LE+) up to Rw=42dB applications.
Antti-Teollisuus Oy commercial director Markko Takkinen says, ”Both doors have the letter E which describes features for electronic applications such as ONLINE locking solutions and door operation automation. The doors were tested with an automatic sill gasket system (drop down gasket) where the gasket is concealed inside the door leaf when door is opened. This system gives an extended lifetime for the gasket as it is better protected when not active.”
Both doors can use a large choice of finishings including paint, PVC-lamination, HPL-lamination or digital prints etc and are equipped with the Antti Marine service-free hinge system including the option to be equipped with the E-HINGE.
Door closing systems can be chosen from a large variety of manual and automatic applications. The double door B-15 Fire Door DdB(LE+) supports an automatic latching operation for both door leaves.
