An agreement with a propulsion manufacturer will help masters of tugs, icebreakers and ice-class vessels gain additional training at a Finnish simulator facility
Turku, Finland-headquartered Aboa Mare has signed a co-operation agreement with Steerprop to offer training on simulators to crew members working on vessels with its propulsion systems.
Steerprop will order tailored simulator training from Aboa Mare for bridge teams working on vessels with its azimuth thrusters and propellers across a range of operating conditions.
Simulator-based courses, organised together with Aboa Mare, will focus on vessel handling, manoeuvring and operational decision-making, using propulsion systems supplied by Steerprop.
Aboa Mare provides realistic, full-mission simulator environments for ship handling, engineroom operations and integrated bridge systems.
Ship operators and owners can use these facilities to improve operational safety, performance and energy efficiency by ensuring crews are familiar with the behaviour and capabilities of propulsion systems in real-world scenarios.
“Through simulator training reflecting real operating scenarios and unique equipment characteristics, we can help crews build competence and confidence before they face challenging situations at sea,” said Aboa Mare training director Thomas Friis.
Simulator-based training is particularly valuable for vessels operating in demanding environments, such as in ice operations, where precise manoeuvring, high availability and accurate positioning are critical.
“Modern azimuth propulsion systems offer significant performance and efficiency benefits, but real value is achieved only when crews fully understand how the systems behave in different operating conditions," said Steerprop director of Arctic and naval segments, Tom Ekegren.
