Sempra Infrastructure advances CO2 capture and storage at Hackberry, part of its Cameron LNG facility
Sempra Infrastructure, in collaboration with TotalEnergies, Mitsui & Co and Mitsubishi Corp, has made significant progress with the Hackberry Carbon Sequestration (HCS) project at the Cameron LNG facility in Hackberry, Louisiana.
This ambitious project aims to capture, transport and permanently store CO2 emissions, marking a crucial step towards reducing the environmental impact of LNG production.
The HCS project is designed to sequester up to 2M tonnes of CO2 annually. CO2 will be captured from the acid gas removal units at Cameron LNG, dehydrated, compressed and then transported via pipeline to a saline aquifer approximately 10 km away.
Sempra Infrastructure chief executive Justin Bird highlighted the pioneering nature of the HCS project, which is among the first North American facilities designed to handle CO2 from multiple sources.
The project aims to set a benchmark for safe and permanent CO2 storage, contributing to the broader efforts of achieving net-zero emissions in the energy sector.
Regulatory milestones have also been achieved, with the HCS project securing the first Environmental Protection Agency permit for such an initiative in Louisiana. This milestone reflects the project’s adherence to stringent environmental standards and regulatory requirements, paving the way for future advancements in carbon capture and storage technologies.
The Hackberry Carbon Sequestration project exemplifies the collaborative effort required to address complex environmental challenges. The partnership between Sempra Infrastructure, TotalEnergies, Mitsui and Mitsubishi illustrates a collective commitment to advancing carbon capture and storage technologies, essential for mitigating the impacts of climate change.
