A Genoa, Italy-based shipping company is installing the latest GMDSS equipment on seven container ships for emergency communications
Ignazio Messina & Co has selected a contractor to install and service Global Maritime Distress and Safety System (GMDSS) on ships it has added to its fleet in the past 12 months.
This Genoese shipping company added seven container ships – Jolly Argento, Jolly Oro, Jolly Rosa, Jolly Giada, Jolly Clivia, Jolly Verde and Jolly Bianco – between August 2023 and April 2024, increasing the company’s liner services in the Mediterranean, Middle East, Indian, African and European markets.
It is installing GMDSS equipment to enable crew on these vessels to contact response services in emergencies and receive global maritime safety information and notifications on navigational hazards.
Ignazio Messina chose Telemar to provide global safety support services on these ships and manage the GMDSS installations.
Telemar, a Marlink subsidiary, will also be responsible for remote support and maintaining radio and navigation equipment on the containers ships’ bridges. This includes radar, ECDIS, conning, workstations and radiocommunications appliances. These contracts will consolidate the servicing of critical bridge navigation equipment to a single provider.
Telemar said this would save time and manpower and reduce the risk of non-compliance, as scheduled services would be planned to agreed timeframes rather than carried out on an ‘ad hoc’ basis.
It will provide Ignazio Messina with proactive remote and inperson support for bridge electronics and communications equipment, reducing potential downtime and increasing efficiency, as it expects a higher percentage of first-time issue fixes.
Telemar anticipates it would streamline troubleshooting and use operational data to deliver further efficiencies through managing repairs remotely instead of sending field engineers to container ships.
Maritime Decarbonisation, Europe: Conference, Awards & Exhibition 2024 address critical environmental issues head-on. Focused on the industry’s energy transition, the conference offers a comprehensive forum for stakeholders across the maritime sector to explore solutions and strategies for achieving low-carbon shipping and zero-emissions shipping.
