Greek dry bulk shipping owner is deploying AI products that promise improved navigation and lowered fuel consumption
Seanergy Maritime Holdings Corp is investing in an artificial intelligence (AI) and computer processing system to improve navigational safety on bulk carriers.
It is installing Orca AI’s automated computer-vision situational awareness platform, including Seapod computer-vision digital watchkeeper units, on its ships – 17 Capesize and one Newcastlemax ship, which transport dry bulk commodities.
By continuously monitoring the maritime environment, Orca AI provides crew with real-time data and insights to enhance their situational awareness and enable them to make informed decisions to avoid hazards and reduce the likelihood of accidents or delays.
This technology enables Seanergy to optimise ship navigation, reducing its environmental impact and fuel consumption by decreasing speed fluctuations and sharp manoeuvres.
“By implementing this cutting-edge technology, we aim to further improve safety and efficiency across our offshore operations, supporting our commitment to delivering reliable and sustainable business practices,” said Seanergy chief operating officer Aristeidis Lagos.
“Installing Orca AI’s platform aligns with our goal of optimising vessel performance and reducing environmental impact, contributing significantly to the company’s operational and sustainability initiatives.”
The fleet of Athens, Greece-based and New York, US-listed Seanergy has an average vessel age of 13.2 years and an aggregate cargo-carrying capacity of 3,236,212 dwt. Seanergy also has another Capesize on order.
“AI and cloud-based digital tools are now coming into their own thanks to recent developments in reliable and rapid broadband connectivity,” said Orca AI chief executive and co-founder Yarden Gross.
“A single AI-driven platform enhances safety, operational efficiency and delivers a robust return on investment for forward-thinking shipping companies.”
