A Japanese shipping group has begun a six-month trial to analyse operational data from its operated ships to lower fuel consumption, machinery operating time and emissions
Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK) is using operational data from its vessels to provide information to crew in an initiative to reduce fuel consumption and emissions.
The Japanese shipping group has teamed up with its technology development subsidiary, MTI Co, and a UK-based data analyst to deliver behavioural changes in daily operations.
Under a trial, operational data from 33 NYK-operated vessels will be analysed, and information will be provided to seafarers for insights into machinery efficiency, to lower operating time and maintenance costs.
NYK expects seafarers to use these insights to change their behaviour to lower fuel use and CO2 emissions, and extend maintenance periods, as it promotes a decarbonisation strategy.
London, UK-headquartered Signol will provide its analytics services for this six-month trial in 2026.
Signol analyses the operational data of each vessel and provides seafarers with personalised goals, positive feedback, and specific behavioural insights based on their individual operational history and current status.
It can visualise how seafarers’ decisions impact fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, thereby promoting operational improvements aimed at savings without compromising safety.
NYK and MTI’s trial aims to optimise the operation of specific engine-related machinery to lower fuel consumption and operating time.
Signol can engage seafarers to save fuel in situations where it might have been a difficult judgement for them, said NYK. By analysing fuel consumption and emissions data collected before and after the six-month trial, NYK will verify the potential for seafarer-led contributions to its decarbonisation efforts.
Additionally, data from this trial will also be provided to Columbia University in New York, USA, for publication in an academic paper as a joint research project.
