Vessels of all sizes and types can use their existing satellite communications antennas to access connectivity through KVH Industries with just a software update
KVH has introduced the One OpenNet scheme enabling vessels with non-KVH antennas to use the communications network through any type of very small aperture terminal (VSAT).
Before this, only vessels with KVH hardware could access the global high-throughput (HTS) network offered by the Rhode Island-headquartered communications group.
A simple software update is needed, but there is no need for any hardware exchange for vessels to access KVH’s VSAT coverage, 24/7 airtime, technical support and value-added services.
“This new program expands the airtime options available to customers,” said KVH executive vice president of sales and marketing Mark Woodhead.
“Fleets with terminals from multiple manufacturers will now enjoy a consistent airtime experience.”
The KVH One OpenNet program is compatible with most Intellian, Cobham Satcom and other maritime VSAT terminals.
“We are delivering a new level of flexibility to equipment manufacturers that wish to install terminals during construction and permit their customers to select their preferred airtime upon delivery,” said Mr Woodhead.
Vessel owners in the KVH One OpenNet scheme will have access to the mobile-responsive KVH suite of management tools for application controls, data usage alerts, managed firewalls and enterprise-grade cyber security, plus KVH’s cloud email for seafarers and Elite premier unlimited streaming package.
Customers can select from among KVH’s airtime plans and month-to-month subscriptions and 276M km2 of coverage via KVH’s global, layered Ku-band HTS network, powered by Intelsat. They can also add crew internet for connectivity and traffic allocation enablement, and KVH Link digital news and entertainment services for crew wellbeing.
