Solstad Offshore is testing new thruster technology on one of its subsea construction vessels to enhance dynamic positioning (DP) and to deliver energy savings
Normand Sentinel will receive this replacement during its next scheduled drydocking. This 143-m, 2015-built ship’s current AZP 120 controllable-pitch, mechanical thrusters will be replaced with RD-AZ2600 electric-driven rim-drive azimuth thrusters.
Rim-drive technology simplifies the propulsion unit by minimising the number of mechanical components, reducing the frequency and complexity of maintenance interventions.
This retrofit should not require any significant modifications to the vessel’s hull, and will not extend the standard drydocking period. The mechanical interface will be removed, but the existing equipment within the hull will remain, enabling the new rim-drive thrusters, supplied by Kongsberg Maritime, to integrate seamlessly with the existing steering gear.
“This strategic move supports the green shift by significantly reducing fuel consumption,” said Solstad chief operating officer Tor Johan Tveit. “The technology improves the vessel’s operability and capacity, while reducing the maintenance scope. This aligns with our continuous commitment to reduce emissions.”
Kongsberg Maritime senior vice president for aftermarket sales James Poulton expects considerable fuel savings from these rim-drive azimuth thrusters.
“This change is not just a technical enhancement but a strategic move towards sustainability, promising energy savings of up to 16% during transit operations and a significant 40% in DP mode,” he said. “The anticipated energy savings, particularly in DP mode, should ensure the vessel remains a preferred choice in the market.”
Solstad operates a fleet of around 40 ships worldwide, all featuring Kongsberg Maritime equipment. In November 2023, Kongsberg Maritime and Solstad signed a collaboration agreement focused on decarbonisation initiatives and the integration of digital technologies to further improve operational efficiency.
