An operator of dry bulk ships in eastern Europe is upgrading satellite communications and cyber security for crew and business applications
Polsteam is upgrading satellite communications and cyber security on a fleet of 50 ships as it seeks to ramp up its use of digital tools for collaboration.
The Polish dry bulk vessel operator will install a hybrid communications network on its ships to connect crews to shore and to remotely monitor onboard operations.
Ship upgrades will include installing new communications terminals and enhancing cyber security including implementing application controls, web filtering, intrusion protection, antivirus software and unified threat management (UTM).
The hybrid network will combine communications through very small aperture terminals (VSAT) and flat-panel antennas for connecting with various constellations, including low Earth orbit (LEO) and geostationary orbiting satellites.
“Our internationally trading fleet requires us to maintain a high level of interaction between masters and managers, using increasingly advanced tools for collaboration,” said Polsteam technical director Adam Rogucki.
Polsteam has contracted Paris, France-headquartered Marlink to upgrade connectivity and cyber security on 50 bulk carriers using its SealinkNextGen hybrid network. This network will integrate SpaceX’s Starlink LEO connectivity with traditional VSAT, managed by Marlink’s XChange platform, to enhance the options available for business applications and to improve connectivity for seafarers.
Polsteam will also utilise Marlink’s UTM, firewall, antivirus and online filters among other security applications to enhance the cyber resilience of its vessel operations.
“These solutions enable us to enhance our remote operations in a secure environment, increasing efficiency and leisure solutions for our crews,” said Mr Rogucki.
Marlink said its hybrid network was “designed for remote operations and offers improved uptime and reliability with secure communications and data transfer.”
