The major US cruise and cargo port is investing in artificial intelligence and digitalisation to improve support for passengers and container handling
Port of Miami intends to create a virtual assistant, powered by artificial intelligence (AI), to support cruise and ferry passengers after receiving numerous enquiries about services at the terminals, said Port of Miami senior strategy and innovation officer, Chris Hudtwalcker.
“We can create an AI virtual assistant for cruise passengers to resolve their issues,” he said. Access to this assistant could be “through a QR code or link on the booking that goes to a chat application to answer their questions. This will improve the customer experience.”
Another digital initiative will focus on the growing container trade through the port, enabling better support for cargo owners, including tracking their goods.
Port of Miami wants to set up a port community system where “all cargo handling is in one system,” said Mr Hudtwalcker, during Maritime Innovation Week in London, UK.
The port authority-led digital service will provide a gateway for bookings and appointments, information on ship arrivals and enable containers to be tracked within the port.
“This would give cargo owners greater cargo visibility,” he added.
But there are challenges to implementing this digital gateway, such as the number of companies, terminal operators and shipping lines this would involve.
“A lot of companies do not want to share data,” said Mr Hudtwalcker.
He said this digital service would offer a competitive advantage for Port of Miami, which competes with nine other ports in Florida.
The next phase of digital investment could include calculating and tracking the environmental footprint of transporting containers and other cargo. “There is technology to assess the emissions using AI, and calculating the carbon footprint,” said Mr Hudtwalcker.
Port of Miami is looking for partners to help develop these digital gateways and AI assistants and for participation from the terminal operators and other stakeholders.
