Shipowner Purus has been linked to a fresh LNG carrier newbuilding contract in South Korea, further expanding its gas carrier portfolio
Samsung Heavy Industries disclosed on 23 December an order for two LNG carriers valued at approximately US$502.8M. While the shipbuilder said the buyer is an undisclosed Oceania-based shipping company, shipbroking sources have linked the deal to Purus. The company declined to comment when contacted by Riviera.
The pair is scheduled for delivery by the end of Q1 2029.
According to information on its website, Purus oversees a fleet of 19 advanced low-carbon gas carriers engaged in the transport of LNG, ammonia, LPG and ethane.
As of August 2025, the fleet has a total capacity of 1.58M m³ and an average age of 0.6 years.
Earlier this summer, Purus confirmed an order for a single 180,000-m³ LNG carrier at Hyundai Heavy Industries.
Meanwhile, in October, the company entered the LNG bunker vessel segment with an order for two 18,900-m³ units at China’s Nantong CIMC Sinopacific Offshore & Engineering (CIMC SOE). The vessels are scheduled for delivery in 2028 and will be chartered to Shell.
According to Veson Nautical’s year-end report, orders for large LNG carriers fell 48% year on year to 35 vessels, compared with 69 in 2024. In contrast, contracting activity for small-scale LNG vessels remained broadly stable, with 26 ships ordered in 2025, up marginally from 25 in 2024.
