Denmark’s Ministry of Climate, Energy and Utilities has confirmed that Thor Wind Farm I/S, led by RWE, has won the concession to build the Thor offshore windfarm in Denmark
The stakeholders in Thor Wind Farm I/S include RWE AG, RWE Renewables GmbH and RWE Renewables Management UK Limited.
The concession was awarded to RWE after the drawing of lots, after more than one bidder offered to build the offshore windfarm at a price of 0.01 øre/kWh,
which means that the project is subsidy-free. Danish Energy Agency director general Kristoffer Böttzauw said, “Thor is yet another milestone in the history of Danish offshore wind.
“For the first time ever, the state will be paid for authorisation to establish an offshore windfarm. The competitive price in the tender is even more impressive because, for the first time, the winning bidder will also have to pay for the landing cables and grid connection. This is very promising for future tendering procedures for offshore wind and for the green transition.”
RWE Renewables chief executive offshore wind Sven Utermöhlen said, “Denmark is one of the key offshore markets in Europe with high growth ambitions.
“We are delighted to be awarded the Thor project. This success creates further momentum to boost our activity in the country by realising our second offshore windfarm off the Danish coast. With Thor we will contribute significantly to Denmark’s green energy transition.”
The draw took place earlier today (1 December 2021) and was monitored by an independent auditor and the Danish state’s legal advisor to ensure that it complied with public procurement terms.
The agency expects to sign the concession agreement with Thor Wind Farm I/S in 4-6 weeks. It is anticipated that Thor will produce electricity from 2026.
The Thor offshore windfarm is the first of three offshore windfarms decided as a part of the 2018 Energy Agreement. Thor will be the largest offshore windfarm in Denmark and will be established 22 km off the coast of Thorsminde on the west coast of Jutland, in the North Sea.
The windfarm was put up for tender with a capacity of 800-1000 MW. The winning bid from RWE will see it develop the 1 GW.
