Emergency teams tackled a large fire in a New South Wales marina, that destroyed three vessels and damaged another
Salvage is being planned for three yachts that caught fire and sank in a marina in New South Wales (NSW), Australia.
Fire teams were scrambled in the early hours of 9 January 2026 to extinguish a blaze that engulfed four yachts at Spit Bridge Marina in Mosman, north of Sydney.
Port Authority of NSW helped Fire and Rescue NSW to contain and extinguish the fire, which destroyed and sank three vessels and caused significant damage to a fourth.
Booms were deployed to contain pollution from the sunken yachts, and attention has turned to salvaging them from the marina.
Port Authority of NSW deployed four vessels to the site, including its multipurpose response and fire-fighting vessel Girawaa, to pump up to 16,000 litres of seawater per minute onto the fire and to protect other private vessels and marina infrastructure from being impacted.
Two layers of absorbent and containment booms were deployed around the sunken vessels to protect the marine environment.
“We are liaising closely with the marina operator and the Environment Protection Authority to monitor and manage potential marine pollution and ensure safe vessel salvage,” said Port Authority of NSW chief operating officer John Finch.
“We will continue to assist Transport for NSW Maritime, NSW Police and Fire and Rescue NSW as required.”
Mr Finch said pollution response vessels would continue to patrol the area to “ensure potential marine pollution, including debris, oil and fuel from the incident, is contained and recovered.”
He added that “all pollution from the incident so far has been contained and the secondary containment boom was deployed as a precaution only.”
The marina owner will take the lead on further clean-up efforts and on co-ordinating the recovery and salvage of the sunken yachts with the owners and insurers.
