The energy major’s AS Norske Shell arm aims to develop a large-scale production facility for clean hydrogen at the Aukra Hydrogen Hub using natural gas from the local gas processing plant at Nyhamna
AS Norske Shell signed the memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Aker Clean Hydrogen, a developer of hydrogen fuel facilities and CapeOmega, an oil and gas infrastructure investor which is part owner, along with multiple energy majors, of the process facility at Nyhamna in Aukra municipality in Møre and Romsdal that Shell part-owns and operates.
The MoU group’s goal for the Nyhamna facility is to develop a clean hydrogen production operation in Aukra that could be used as a hydrogen fuel hub for shipping and road transport. The hydrogen fuel hub could also be used to serve local industry and export hydrogen to European consumers.
“Together we have got what it takes to develop, build and operate the Aukra Hydrogen Hub safely and cost-efficiently,” said chief executive of Aker Clean Hydrogen, Knut Nyborg.
Aker Clean Hydrogen aims to reach a net installed capacity of 5 GW by 2030, the company said.
Earlier in 2021, Aker Clean Hydrogen and Aukra municipality reached an agreement granting Aker Clean Hydrogen exclusive rights to explore and develop a project for producing hydrogen, ammonia, and related products in Aukra. In June 2021, Aker Clean Hydrogen entered an MoU with CapeOmega around developing a hydrogen fuel hub they called the Aukra Hydrogen Hub.
The Nyhamna processing facility was built to export gas from the Ormen Lange gas field on the Norwegian Continental Shelf and has been expanded.
In addition to its stake in Nyhamna, Shell is the operator of the Ormen Lange gas field on the Norwegian continental shelf.
