SpeedCast International has become the first Inmarsat partner to integrate SoftNSD, the software element of the Fleet Xpress network service device into its satellite communications offering to shipping.
SoftNSD enables third-party application providers to develop and publish content-rich applications over Fleet Xpress. This would make these applications available to maritime users that are signed up to using Inmarsat’s Ka-band/L-band service.
Applications including real-time data analytics, engine monitoring, weather information and fuel consumption rates could be developed for the platform. Both SpeedCast and Inmarsat expect these applications to deliver benefits in operational efficiency, safety and compliance, IT security and crew welfare.
The integration of the software element of the SoftNSD will also enable SpeedCast to generate its own value-adding solutions and applications over its Sigma gateway. This is an industrial-grade network management device designed for ships and remote sites. The Sigma gateway provides automated and efficient management of multiple network links and enables business applications on vessels.
Last year SpeedCast and Inmarsat announced a strategic partnership to roll out Fleet Xpress to around 2,000 vessels over the next five years. The Fleet Xpress service uses Inmarsat’s Global Xpress Ka-band network and FleetBroadband L-band services for unlimited back up.
